Hot off the red carpet …

September 8th, 2010

Emily Bunt at the 62nd Emmy AwardsWe have a new beauty love at nonstopmama: Moroccanoil haircare. Brilliant for taming dry, frizz-prone locks behaving badly (school run scary hair, anyone?), this range of simple, naturally nourishing argan oil-enriched treats makes a real difference in restoring softness and shine. No, really (that did sound a bit shampoo ad. So, we’re enthusiastic).

Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling CreamParticularly good for conditioning and defining curls, Moroccanoil is becoming a runway (sorry) success with catwalk and red carpet stylists – London-born, LA-based hair stylist Laini Reeves, co-owner of the new Essensuals London salon on Melrose Avenue, used the products on actress Emily Blunt at the Emmy Awards last week (pictured, by Jeff Kravitz for Getty Images).

Our favourites include the classic Moroccanoil Treatment, Hydrating Cream and Intense Curl Cream. The range is available at selected salons and spas, for more info and stockists, visit moroccanoil.com.

Quick change

September 7th, 2010

Pretty Quik Instant Nail Polish RemoverTaking off nail polish the traditional way – bottle of remover balanced precariously somewhere, endless cotton wool balls – can be a time consuming and, honestly, whiffy business. Two alternatives get our vote, for making quick colour changes less of a chore.

We first came across the ‘dip and twist’ nail polish remover on the other side of the Atlantic. A great way of quickly – and unmessily – whipping colour off each nail in turn, they’re also ideal for treating individual chipped/smudged nails without fuss. Pretty Quik Instant Polish Remover (£1.95, at Boots and selected chemists) scores highly for its handy little tub, too.

Nails Inc Express Remover WipeNext up, Nail Inc.’s Express Remover Wipes (£6 for a box of five) are stronger than conventional ones – each thick wipe (more of a pad, really) is designed to remove polish from all 10 nails. You can buy them at branches and stockists of Nails Inc. nationwide (to locate your nearest, hop over to nailsinc.com). They’re great for fast-change pedicures, even with darker shades.

A deep breath, bottled …

August 25th, 2010

Aveda Energising CompositionWe love a multi-tasking beauty product at nonstopmama – anything to help a girl feel more pulled together (’polished’ may be pushing it) in as little time as possible – and here’s one of our latest discoveries. It’s not new, it’s just (we think) fab: Aveda’s Energizing Composition (£18). A bit of a treat (although you could make one bottle last for ages), it’s billed as a body oil but can also be added to a bath (or foot soak) or applied to the scalp. We have even used it, super-sparingly, to add shine and a bit of control to unruly (grown-up) curls. But, the clincher for us, is the smell. Gorgeous. Uplifting. Yet calming, too. It makes you take a deep breath and feel ready to face the world (outside the bathroom, where you’re hiding for a few moments) again. Mmmm …

Sunshine and showers

July 23rd, 2010

Johnson's 24 Hour Moisture Gentle Exfoliating Body WashProof that fab-smelling, feel-good beauty treats don’t have to blow the budget, we’re loving Johnson’s new 24 Hour Moisture Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash With Shea & Cocoa Butters (£2.99, available now at chemists and supermarkets), which has the most yummy, made-for-summer scent and helps to get skin glowing (it’s a great one to use pre-self-tanning).

Another hot weather favourite, Sanex’s new Dermo Hypro Allergenic Shower Gel (£1.95) is formulated for very sensitive skin. But we just love the fresh, uplifting smell and the fact that it feels gentle on the skin and not drying.

Camp Bestival 2010A note to family festival-goers: the Johnson’s Baby team will be at Camp Bestival this year – taking place at Lulworth Castle, Dorset, from Friday 30 July – Sunday 1 August – with a bespoke Johnson’s Baby “flower” baby changing area (more info on this to come!) and toddlers’ play area, amongst other things. They’ll also be giving away 1,000 packs of Johnson’s Baby Skincare Wipes (a camping must-pack) over the weekend. For more info and tickets, visit campbestival.co.uk).

Tress relief

July 21st, 2010

200006029One of our dear friends at nonstopmama is in the midst of a hair crisis (a perm that left her locks frazzled, and in urgent need of some professional TLC). It’s still a work in progress, but we gave her the latest damaged hair treatment trio from US salon brand Bumble & Bumble to try in the meantime.

Her verdict? The new Mending Shampoo (£21), Conditioner (£23) and Masque (£27) “for the (truly) damaged” has, she said, definitely helped to restore softness and manageability. It’s available at selected salons nationwide, and you can buy Bumble & Bumble products online at spacenk.co.uk).

Crazy colour

July 6th, 2010

Models Own Nail Polish in Pink ExplosionWe have a new beauty love at nonstopmama: neon, flashback-to-the-Eighties (but even more so) nails. Yes, there are a gazillion around and, also, we worried if we could pull it off at, er, let’s just say we did flouro the first time around. Then we had a play with Models Own Nail Polish (£5 ) in Pink Explosion (we were on facepaints and nail art at our church fete – hearts, flowers, lots of pink and awash with glitter - and when in Rome … ).

A gorgeous, truly ‘popping’ pink, it has just enough sparkle to make toes twinkle in the sunshine. And there are plenty of other swoon-worthy shades to instantly put high summer in your step. Even better, the colour glides on easily (and we’ve got butter fingers) and – four days on – has yet to chip. Find it at Boots and River Island stores, or online at boots.com and modelsownit.com.

Lash fantastic

June 18th, 2010

Tweezerman's Pro Lash CurlerSo, the UK beauty pack is buzzing about the impending, hotly awaited arrival of the Tweezerman Pro Lash Curler (pictured left) next month. Already a huge hit in the US, the eyelash curlers – launching exclusively at Harrods in July – promise to be as popular as the must-have tweezers (nonstopmama relies on the fab, butterfingers-friendly Wide Grip Tweezer - below right – for staying on top of stragglers and looking half awake).

Tweezerman Wide Grip TweezerAs we’ve yet to meet a make-up artist who doesn’t stand by the “curl your lashes before applying mascara” rule – and given that so many pros swear by Tweezerman for plucking perfect arches – the new, high-spec curler, featuring expertly contoured finger loops and a precision-designed “top bar”, is one to check out. Until it becomes more widely available, you will be able to buy online (from July) at harrods.com. The Wide Grip Tweezer, meanwhile, is widely available at stockists nationwide and online at sites including amazon.

Five minutes with … Louise Galvin

June 4th, 2010

Louise GalvinCelebrity colourist Louise Galvin has the sort of golden, impossibly well behaved-looking mane that prompts us to tear pictures out of glossies to present to our own colourists, with an apologetic “I know it won’t look exactly like this, but …”.  (Mine is always ready for it. She even pauses to see what I’ve rustled up this time, before mixing up the peroxide in her little plastic bowl in our kitchen).

The hotly sought after tinter (on both sides of the Atlantic) and daughter of UK hairdressing legend Daniel, Louise is currently expecting her second child. Meanwhile, her professional “babies”, the hugely popular and very gorgeous Natural Locks and Sacred Locks product ranges, are a hit with Louise’s high profile clients and beauty editors and have scooped awards. Made without the use of parabens, SLS, petrochemicals, silicones or synthetic fragrances, both collections are formulated especially to give colour-treated tresses ultra-gentle, specialist care (for more info and to buy online, visit louisegalvin.com. Nonstopmama readers can snag an exclusive  20 % discount on any order – simply enter the code “nonstopmama” at checkout!).

‘Some people are lucky enough to have luscious locks throughout their pregnancy and beyond,’ Louise tells us. ‘But others find the rush of changing hormones makes their hair greasier/thinner or simply ‘different’ to how it has always been.’.

Just for nonstopmama, Louise shares her expert tricks for keeping hair in tip-top condition – during pregnancy and thereafter – below.

Louise Galvin Natural Locks Pure Shine Shampoo•  Keep it simple! Don’t go for a drastic change in hairstyle. Pregnancy is a time when you want to feel your most feminine. Keep hair in good condition for ultimate shine and movement.

•  If you colour your hair, speak with your colourist to establish the best time for colour just before the birth. This will give you time to enjoy your new arrival and not have to worry about roots and re-growth in those precious first weeks. Brunettes should try semi-permanent glosses that will add shine and depth to colour. Most colourists will be happy to mix you a colour to take home for between salon visits. If you have highlights, keep them soft and natural. The current trend allows for a little re-growth.

•  Use gentle products like my Sacred Locks or Natural Locks line, which won’t strip colour and will add shine and moisture to really nourish hair. I developed the Mother To Be line to be fragrance-free. I found when I was pregnant, I couldn’t bare any smells – even the delicious citrus oils in my own products. There is also research that suggests in the first months of a baby’s life, fragrances worn by the mother can act as a barrier to mother and baby bonding. The products are created to use on babies too, gentle, paraben and fragrance-free.  I used my Mother to Be products on my daughter Ophelia for the first two years.

•  The less is more philosophy is one that can be carried throughout pregnancy and beyond. Keep colour to a minimum. And even when those nasty grey hairs start to come through, get your colourist to paint between the lights to disguise the grey rather than going for a tint and lights. And remember healthy, shiny hair will always be more manageable and look more youthful.

The Louise Galvin Natural Locks and Sacred Locks ranges are available at louisegalvin.com. Don’t forget that you can claim 20 % off any order by entering the code “nonstopmama” at checkout.
