Suits you, mama

September 6th, 2010

Panache Swimsuit from Beau Dame LingerieAfter running our review of the first Spanx ‘Slimming Swimsuit’, we were contacted by the online boutique Beau Dame Lingerie, which specialises in expertly, um, constructed ’shapewear’. We’d already heard about Beau Dame from a Dutch mama, who raved about the fact that it stocks plus sizes, too, and has a wide range of pretty and modern styles. After reconstructive breast surgery, she’d treated herself to a few confidence re-building buys from the boutique.

There’s a good choice of one pieces, ranging from the simple (like this one by Panache, right – currently on sale at £11.95) to a frilly, polka-dot ‘Miraclesuit’ (pricier, at £90). Like the Spanx Slimming Swimsuit, the latter takes some getting into, but once you’re in, it feels like it’s supporting you more than a normal suit (helping you walk a little taller). And, while we are definitely of the view that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes – with real life lumps, bumps and all – a cossie that makes a girl feel a bit more supported when she exits the changing room is worth knowing about, no? Check out the full range (including maternity pieces) at beaudamelingerie.co.uk.

Jeanius!

August 28th, 2010

Gap mid-length denim skirtWe’re always fans of a ‘forgiving’ skirt at nonstopmama (the word ‘flattering’ never sounds great, does it?). This one, just in at Gap, is surprisingly so, with a slim but not at all skin-tight shape, hitting only just above the knee (can we say forgivingly again?) and not bad at £35 (you can now buy Gap online in the UK now, too, at gap.eu - sign up with your email and you’ll get a ‘welcome’ discount code to use in stores and online).

Described as ‘mid-length’, this find would work with bare legs and flip-flops on sunny days right now, then teamed with tights and boots when autumn is truly underway. Available in Medium or Dark Wash (we’re liking the Dark – but doubt we could do the school run in those heels).

Charming idea

June 17th, 2010

Kit Heath's new Beachcomber 'Destination' braceletCharm bracelet fever continues and they’re a great, sure-to-be-loved gift idea (as long as you choose a charm that’s actually compatible with the recipient’s bracelet, as we recently learned to our embarrassment – ah).

One name to check out is Kit Heath, an award-winning silver jeweller whose new Beachcomber collection features ‘pebble’ charm beads, inspired by surfside colours and textures. Meanwhile, the company’s Kids by Kit Heath range features some sweet ideas for special occasions.

Better still, Kit Heath is running a Jewellery Amnesty, in association with Save The Children. You can donate any silver which is no longer wanted, tarnished or broken (never fixed knick knacks and totally tangled chains, anyone?) to be sold for scrap, with all money raised going to the charity. What better excuse to have a bit of a clear-out? For more info on the Jewellery Amnesty and to buy Kit Heath pieces online, click here.

Five minutes with … Charlotte Pearl

June 11th, 2010

Charlotte Pearl of Pink LiningWe’ve long been fans of the Pink Lining range of gorgeous, oh-so-distinctive bags – the ‘Yummy Mummy’ changing bag and carry-all has become a modern classic – and accessories for mamas on-the-go (we featured the fab Christmas stockings, with all profits going to the NSPCC, last winter). So, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to catch up with Charlotte Pearl, the label’s London-based founder and a nonstopmama of three.

Here, Charlotte shares her tips for feeling pulled-together fast, packing for a family outing and staying on top of clutter at home.

Dress Creatively

•  ’I think it’s much better to be quite spontaneous,’ says Charlotte. ‘What I wear often depends on my mood that morning, mixing and matching prints or fabrics is far more fun than something more traditional.’

•  ’Your clothes are an expression of your personality but, so saying, I do a lot of walking in between school runs, the office and the playground. So as much as I love high heels, I live in flats during the day.  At the moment, I love my brogues which I’ve pepped up by replacing the laces with peppermint green ribbons – functional footwear, with a quirky twist!’

•  ’When stuck for ideas, I think the classic French combination of a navy skirt/trousers with a Breton striped top, lifted with a bright scarf, is always a chic option.’

Express beauty

•  ’My make-up is very minimal but I always carry rose tinted Vaseline to moisturise lips and accent cheekbones,’ says Charlotte. ‘Although quite expensive, Dior nude skin, a compact complete with mirror, is a great quick cover-up to achieve a more polished look.’

•  ’Spraying a little of my favourite perfume – Creed – through the air and quickly walking through it before I leave home ensures I’m subtly ensconced in my favourite scent and immediately uplifts me.’

Breakfast to-go

•  ’Jordans quick porridge sachets take a few minutes to cook on the stove – they can also be microwaved – and are a healthy, filling breakfast – especially with chopped bananas,’ says Charlotte.

Get packing

•  ’I have designed our changing bags with ease of packing in mind,’ she explains. ‘I tend to use every one of the pockets inside for Mother’s essentials, such as my mobile and blackberry. I zip valuables into the inside pocket. I can pack nappies and wipes into the pouch pockets, milk bottles into the insulated inbuilt bottle holders (I fill these with water and keep the milk powder in a separate container). I always pack snacks for the children (and me!) such as dried fruit, raisins, cereal bars and chocolate for emergencies!  The children always have their mini Pink Lining rucksacks (which are lightweight and small enough that they don’t mind carrying them themselves), into which they pack some little toys, pencils and colouring paper.’

Pink Lining's Yummy Mummy BagWhat’s in store

•  ’I find storage at home is always quite challenging – with all the usual home paraphernalia, as well as my designs etc., I like finding alternative storage ideas. For example, instead of a bookcase, I have an old wooden dresser in the drawing room – the shelves are great for books and the cupboards underneath for DVDs and so on, then Pink Lining toy bags for all the toys. I have just found a great company that provides coloured metal school lockers I am going to order, to file away my work.’.

In the swim …

May 26th, 2010

SPANX Slimming SwimwearWhen we heard that SPANX had done swimsuits, we joked we’d be tempted to wear them around the clock. Actually, we nearly did. They’re not kidding when they warn you, on the tag, “our one piece suits are snug to put on, but comfortable once you’re in!”. But, true to their word, the ‘Slimming Swimsuit’ we tried (pictured – and not on us), was so comfy, we wore it with jeans for the rest of the day (ignoring the odd raised eyebrow at the school gate. Maybe it made us a little too confident). As well as holding in our ‘mummy-tummy’ (which we’ve always had, in truth) just enough to make us feel less self-conscious than we would usually, it remained comfortable all day – without feeling tight or digging in anywhere – and stayed in place.

At the top end of the range, SPANX Slimming Swimsuits cost around £155 and are available online from slimthing.co.uk and themagicknickershop.co.uk. Selected styles are also available at HarrodsJohn Lewis and Selfridges. We’ll be looking at other “body-shaping” cossies, in all price ranges, over the coming weeks. Watch this (tight) space …

Jean genie

May 4th, 2010

The Gap Curvy jeansWhen we make a mummy-friendly discovery at nonstopmama, we like to share it – immediately. Our Bank Hol weekend find was the Curvy shape jean by The Gap.

If you’re looking for a pair of jeans that sit nicely, not naffly (if that makes sense) below the waist – so you don’t have to keep hoiking them up within a few hours of being tumble-dried – are super-flattering on the thighs and have a great overall shape and colour, well, we like these. They may not make your pins look like this (left) – not much sign of a “mummy tummy” here, either, sigh … But, for us, they tick all the other boxes, at £45 a pair. Worth a try-on.

Pietra or Electra?

April 20th, 2010

FitFlop Electra SilverIt’s no secret that nonstopmama is a huge fan of the FitFlop (funky, great for cranky backs and less than perfect posture. Plus, the whole thing about getting a workout without realising it – what’s not to love? Founder Marcia Kilgore told nonstopmama why she created them in an interview last winter).

So, while the glossies are going ga-ga over the new-look gladiator sandals and clogs – and we’ve been tempted by both, at New Look and Clarks, respectively – we’re cooing over the irresistibly glittery new Electra (we love the Silver) and more-than-a-bit-glam Pietra FitFlops, featuring a slightly slimmer sole than the classic and a trio of resin ‘jewels’. Available in Pewter (our fave, pictured), Black and Bronze, they’d definitely add some sparkle to the school run (although, truthfully, we think we’d wear them everywhere). Decisions, decisions …

Wet, wet, wet

March 30th, 2010

Mac by Mini BodenCall them April Showers come early. Whatever, sending children out in something lightweight but showerproof is definitely the order of the day. So why not go cheerily bright and bold?

Nonstopmama’s favourite picks include this traditional-with-a-twist mac by Mini Boden (from Waterproof jacket by Kozikidz£34, for ages 2 to 13, at boden.co.uk) and the funkily striped, 100% waterproof jackets from fab Swedish label KoziKidz (£38), for boys and girls. Its website, kozikidz.co.uk, has a whole section devoted to practical but great-looking “Rainwear” – very realistic for the UK market! Who says keeping dry has to be ‘blah’?

Give us a twirl …

March 9th, 2010

Layered Skirt by VerbaudetWe don’t know what little girls will love more about this new Layered Skirt from Verbaudet (from £14) – the neon-bright colour (very lime Popsicle) or fab, verging-on-flamenco-y ruffles. The perfect spring/summer party skirt – or, let’s face it, supermarket/go anywhere number – it’s made of cotton and satin and also comes in hot pink, midnight blue and, a bit scarier, white (watch those ice cream splodges) .

Gorgeous – shame they don’t make them for grown-ups!

In the bag

March 1st, 2010

ZPM 3-Bagz in Flower Of Nepal I don’t know about you, but I’m always buying Bags for Life yet never have them on me when I need one. I’ve tried keeping one squished-up at the bottom of my handbag, just in case – impractical, and the handle ends up getting stuck in the zip. Tada, the solution: ZPM’s new, gorgeously funky and geniusly practical 3 Bagz (£9.95), available at zpm.com. This teeny pouch (truly) unzips to reveal a small, medium and seriously substantial nylon shopper. Crucially, all three bags are as easy to stuff back into the carrier as they are to get out (not at all like trying to get a child’s sleeping bag into its carry bag – grrr). Brilliant.
