Nothing could be simpler than a ponytail, right? It’s hardly something you “style”, is it? That’s the whole point.

Yes. And no …

Without making things more complicated – it’s a ponytail, after all, intended to get your hair off your face and you out the door as quickly as possible – where you position it and how tightly you pull your hair back can make all the difference.

Stylists recommend thinking soft not severe, especially as we get older. So, rather than scrape it back tightly, aim to gently gather your hair back into a low-ish ponytail, using your fingers rather than a brush. If some pieces fall forward, let them, and don’t worry about a little natural frizz or a few flyaways.

And here, on finer hair, secured at a flattering mid-height …

Try using a little hair product to add texture to your hair before taking it back into the ponytail, such as John Frieda’s new Luxurious Volume Anytime Volume Refresher (£5.89) or a dry shampoo, even, such as the ever-popular Batiste.
