International make-up artist, beauty mogul and nonstopmama Ruby Hammer has helped many a famous face shine for magazine covers, catwalks and red carpet roll-outs. We persuaded her to reveal some of the tricks and product recommendations that would work equally well for the school run and nearly-here party season…
Your schedule truly is nonstop, with lots of early starts. What are the day-to-day staples you wouldn’t be without?
I can’t do without body moisturiser as my skin is quite dry and I hate the feeling of un-moisturised skin. I apply lots of Jergens’ Ultra Hydrating Body Moisturiser after showering, which is really great value so I don’t feel guilty for being really generous with it.
My mascara is another beauty staple. I love Max Factor’s Masterpiece Max for adding length and volume to my lashes and giving me a wide awake look. I apply lip balm all the time, so love Crème de la Mer’s balm as it feels luxurious and is a real treat to apply. I always apply an SPF moisturiser, so my skin is protected – Sisley All Day, All Year is one of my favourites.
Any great tricks for concealing the telltale signs of an interrupted night?
Start by washing your face and splashing with lots of cool water to help get the blood flowing. Eyes are a real giveaway when you are tired, so concentrate on these. A great product to try if you are short on sleep is Yves Saint Laurent’s Top Secrets Instant Eye Wake-Up Eye Patches, followed by eye brightening drops to help reduce redness and brighten the whites of your eyes
Use a tinted moisturiser to take away any greyness that tired skin can have and really take time to massage it into the face to help plump the skin.
Always use eyelash curlers and mascara to help open your eyes up as much as possible. Another great tip is to line the inner rim of your eyes with a nude pencil – it’s less harsh and more subtle than using a white pencil and will help your eyes look more awake.
What helps you stay energised and de-stressed on a madly busy day?
I always take a good multivitamin, to help keep my natural defences topped up and swear by Origins Organic Matcha Green Tea. It’s full of anti-oxidants and gives me a boost without having to resort to caffeine!
Are there any beauty/well-being treatments you try to make time for?
Facials and massages are the beauty treatments I always try and schedule in. Facials help keep my skin looking good so I can weather the busy times and massage is essential for de-stressing. I think it’s important to try and use these treatments as maintenance though, and not wait until you and your body is desperate.
Any suggestions for going from daytime-blur to night-time glam, on the run?
Still stick with a good tinted moisturiser, lash curlers and a great mascara but add to it some tinted gloss and a sweep of blusher for a bit of extra colour. Eyeliner is one of the quickest and easiest ways to transform your look for an evening out, so experiment on the look you like the best. You can either create a winged-out look on the top lashes or a sexy smudgy look, by applying on the bottom lashes. If you have some cotton buds and make up remover to hand, you can always tone down the look if you think you’ve been too heavy handed or correct any mistakes.
